Homa (also known as homam or havan) is a Sanskirt word (Sanskrit: हवन) which refers to any ritual in which making offerings into a consecrated fire is the primary action. Its practice by "Rishis" in ancient time refers close to the Vedic era. At present, the words homa/homam and havan are interchangeable with the word Yajna & Agnihotra.

In Hindu mythology there will be special place for performing Homam (Sacred Fire). In the olden days there is Nitya Agnihotram in some traditional families. Even today also in some areas people regularly performing Nitya Agnihotram.
In India whenever people starting any things first they worship Lord Ganesha by performing Maha Ganapathi Homam for the blessing of Lord Ganesha in their newly started business and on other things.
In India performing Homam is very auspicious in many occasions right from the birth of new child for his/her naming ceremony, and also for their Anna Prasana ceremony, in new house warming ceremony, in temples on festivals occasions, at the time of performing Lord Satyanarayana Swamy Vratham like these on many occasions people actively participating for the preparations of performing Homam (Yajnam).

Many benefits are there with performing yajnam (Homam) , first of all atmosphere to clean and surrounding areas also becoming sacred and divine.
